The Simple Definition
Hi-Res Audio refers to digital audio with higher resolution than a standard CD — meaning more data per second, capturing more of the original recording. The industry standard definition (set by the Japan Audio Society and adopted by most streaming platforms) is audio with a bit depth greater than 16-bit and/or a sample rate greater than 44.1kHz.
In plain terms: more detail, more dynamic range, and more accuracy to what the musicians actually played in the studio.
Bit Depth and Sample Rate — What They Mean
These two numbers define audio quality. Understanding them takes 60 seconds.
Sample Rate (kHz)
Digital audio works by taking thousands of "snapshots" of an audio signal per second. The sample rate tells you how many. CD audio samples at 44,100 times per second (44.1kHz). Hi-Res audio goes up to 96kHz, 192kHz, or even 384kHz.
A higher sample rate can capture higher frequencies and allows reconstruction of the waveform with greater accuracy between samples.
Bit Depth (bit)
Each sample is stored as a number. The bit depth determines how many possible values that number can have. CD uses 16-bit — giving 65,536 possible values per sample. Hi-Res uses 24-bit — giving 16,777,216 possible values.
More values = more precise representation of volume at each moment = greater dynamic range (the difference between the quietest and loudest sounds). 24-bit gives roughly 144dB of dynamic range vs 96dB for 16-bit.
The human hearing range: We hear frequencies up to ~20kHz and perceive dynamic range up to ~120dB in ideal conditions. Hi-Res goes beyond both — which is partly why the "can you actually hear the difference?" debate exists.

Hi-Res Audio Formats
Not all file formats support Hi-Res. Here are the main ones:
What doesn't qualify as Hi-Res: MP3, AAC, OGG — these are lossy formats that permanently discard audio data during encoding. Even at high bitrates, they cannot be "Hi-Res."
Watch Out for Fake Hi-Res
A common problem: a CD-quality recording (16-bit/44.1kHz) gets converted to a 24-bit/96kHz FLAC file and sold as "Hi-Res." The file is technically larger, but contains no additional audio information — the extra resolution is empty.
This is called upsampled or fake Hi-Res. You can detect it by analyzing the frequency spectrum: a genuine Hi-Res recording will have content above 22kHz; an upsampled CD recording will show a hard cutoff at exactly 22kHz, even inside a 96kHz file.

How to Listen to Hi-Res Audio on Android
Android supports Hi-Res Audio playback, but the default audio stack applies system-level mixing that can interfere with bit-perfect output. To hear Hi-Res at its full potential, you need a player that bypasses this mixer.

Is Hi-Res Audio Worth It?
Honest answer: it depends on your chain.
If you're listening through phone speakers or low-quality earbuds, you won't hear a meaningful difference between 16/44 FLAC and 24/96 FLAC. The bottleneck is the output device, not the file.
If you're listening through a quality DAC + headphones or speakers, the improvement becomes real — particularly in dynamic range (the subtle detail in quiet passages), stereo imaging, and the sense of space around instruments.
The practical starting point: get a lossless player first (CD-quality FLAC already beats MP3 significantly), then upgrade your DAC and headphones, then consider Hi-Res files.
